The Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) file format is used to make 2D graphics viewable across a wide range of applications such as technical
manual illustrations, cartography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and presentations. It is most often created from a specialized application to become the final output that end users will look at. It is a standard in aerospace, semiconductor manufacturing, automotive and the telecommunications industries for technical manuals such as product operation, maintenance and repair. These books can be printed or available on-line (IETMS). CGM is also used in the petroleum industry for mapping, lithology cross-sections, seismic traces and well logs while the U.S. military uses CGM for simple redlining on top of raster (map) data.
No matter where it's used, CGM is a vector-based file format used for storage, exchange and publishing of technical graphics ranging from CAD drawings to geological plots. Many companies need it for their PDM (Product Data Management), SGML/XML documentation and IETM (Illustrated Electronic Technical Manual) publishing systems.
