TECH TIP: Do I need pdf2picture or pdf2image with Microsoft Office?

pdf2picture converts PDF files into the native vector graphics format
for Microsoft Windows. This format is called WMF, or Windows Metafile. It is a scalable vector format which means that it is based on objects such as lines, curves and text. A WMF file can be grouped into one scalable object or ungrouped into its individual components. pdf2picture is used to convert charts, graphics, presentation slides and more from the PDF format into files that can be edited or scaled in MS applications. One note of caution - for text to transfer well, the same fonts need to be on the target system that are in the original file. If they are not, pdf2picture will substitute the closest match. For more on defining font mappings and on this challenging issue, please see our Tech Note:

pdf2picture should be chosen if any of the following are of primary importance:

  • scalability
  • editability
  • ability to magnify with losing sharpness

pdf2image is used to convert a PDF file into any of the standard web and publishing formats - GIF, PNG and JPEG. Using pdf2image, you can convert a PDF document, page or section of a page into a clean and sharp WYSIWYG reproduction in a supported web format. pdf2picture is often used in the publishing of information received from 3rd parties in the PDF format and then pumped to printing systems or the web.

pdf2image should be chosen when:

  • No further editing is required
  • Image will not be scaled up in size
  • An absolutely identical match is required
